This comes over as a mockery of everything soldierly, Corelli juxtaposes the sublime and the ridiculous here, the army represents everything masculine such as heroism, pride and machismo whereas opera represents everything feminine because it mostly deals with relationships, emotions and the drama that accompany them.
What a droopy, disappointing film this is. Corelli mentions how he experimented with playing the violin. Pelagia takes on allegorical significance and becomes a symbolic of individual over masses, homogeneity, uniformity, and conformity. The mandolin is not only an instrument of music but also a device that acts to spiritually cleanse, this notion that music has a greater symbolic resonance as a healing channel emerges through out the chapter and indeed the novel.
The scene in the town square when the Greeks refuse to surrender to the Italians, preferring instead the Nazis, deserves a lusty laugh. At first, everything seems great when our protagonists learn that Mussolini has surrendered and the war is over for them. Corelli has to stay hidden from the German soldiers, whose orders are to kill any surviving Italians.
But all the vitally emotional warfare is muted. Please help improve it by removing unnecessary details and making it more concise. Pelagia hates these arrangements, until the captain captivates her with his mandolin.
He detests the war and gradually falls in love with Pelagia; but the war inevitably tears them apart again. Suddenly, the skies erupt with military aircraft and parachutes blossom. Corelli compares Pelagia spiritually, psychologically and physically to his Mandolin. Frankly, no one could look more ill-at-ease or unconvincing with a musical instrument, and with so much broad comedy in his performance it would not be very surprising if Cage tried blowing into it.
